Most of my best pieces (according to me) are first drafts. Those ones that wake you up in the middle of the night or just come out of nowhere and you just have to write in that moment.

I just start typing on note pad.

Then I have the snippets of ideas I write out. Sometimes they sit there for weeks and I go back and realize they are pretty good and I finish the job.

If I get stuck on one bit I ask a friend of mind to read it for me.
